  • Description

Rain and a spectacular match-saving comeback by American Clark Graebner robbed Britain's top tennis seed Roger Taylor of another giant killing act in today's (Tuesday's) men's singles quarter-final clash in the Wimbledon Open Championships.

Taylor, the Yorkshire man who put out world champion Rod Laver on Saturday again raised his game against an opponent seeded well above him in the championships.

Backed by a partisan Centre Court Crow, Taylor raced to a 6-3 lead in the first set. The second set went with service until Graebner finally cracked in the twentieth game, losing 11-9.

Taylor was now completely dominant. He again cracked Graebner's service early in the third set. But as the Yorkshire man served for the match he lost his composure and conceded his service for the first time, allowing Graebner to break back.

The American succeeded in saving two match points in the twelfth game of the third set. Then, with the score at 8-7 in Taylor's favour, rain intervened. Play was called off -- much to the disgust of Graebner who was beginning to get into the match for the first time.
