  • Description

A GROUP OF 112 SOVIET VOLUNTEERS ARRIVED IN ALGIERS ON SUNDAY TO HELP REBUILD VILLAGES DESTROYED IN THE ALGERIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE BETWEEN 1954 AND 1962.

THE VOLUNTEERS ARRIVED ABOARD THE CARGO SHIP "KRASNOE ZNAMA". THE SHIP ALSO BROUGHT TIMBER, TRACTORS AND OTHER MATERIALS TO BE USED IN REBUILDING THE VILLAGES. THE RUSSIANS, ALL YOUNG PEOPLE, WILL WORK IN THE KABYLIA REGION, WHICH SUFFERED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DURING THE WAR.

THE SAME DAY, PRESIDENT BEN BELLA ADDRESSED A RALLY AT ALGIERS FORUM, TO MARK THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF ALGERIAN INDEPENDENCE. IN HIS TWO-HOUR SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT STRESSED THAT ALGERIA'S SOCIALISM "STEMS FROM ISLAM". HE ADDED: "WE REPEAT BEFORE WORLD OPINION THAT WE ARE NOT COMMUNIST."
PRESIDENT BEN BELLA ALSO CONDEMNED THE INCREASINGLY OPEN OPPOSITION TO HIS REGIME. HE TOLD THE RALLY THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD LAUNCH IN "THE COMING WEEKS" A PURGE OF GROUPS FINANCING ANTI-GOVERNMENT ELEMENTS. HE ALSO THREATENED TO ARM CIVILIANS PREPARED TO CRUSH OPPOSITION IF "IT WAS NEEDED TO DEFEND THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE REVOLUTION."
