Background: Canada's first trade mission to the People's Republic of China arrived in Peking at the end of June for talks with Prime Minister Chou En-lai. The visit cements relations between the two countries following the establishment of diplomatic relations last October.
The Canadians, headed by Industry, Trade and Commerce Minister Jean-Luc Pepin, made their visit at the invitation of Chinese Minister Pai Hsiang-kuo. He was also present on July 2 when Premier Chou had talks with the Canadians. The film of their meeting comes from Peking Television.
SYNOPSIS: A Canadian trade mission flew to Peking at the end of last month. The Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade Pai Hsiang-kuo led the welcome at the airport. He had invited the Canadians. It's their first trade mission to visit the People's Republic of China, and follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries last October. The Canadian Ambassador and embassy officials were also at the airport.
On July 2nd, Prime Minister Chou En-lai met the leader of the mission, Canadian Industry, trade and Commerce Minister Jean-Luc Pepin, and his wife. Premier Chou said he was happy to receive the Canadian mission. He added his conviction that the two countries could help supply each other's needs and continue to participate in friendly exchanges. M. Pepin said that his mission did not restrict itself to trade matters, but was also intended to promote good relations between the two countries in all fields.
