TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: LINDSAY: "(I have) decided to seek the Presidency; and I will begin that effort in the Florida primary. I am here because my fight for the nomination begins with this primary and will end at the Convention in this city. I am here because Florida, with its economic and cultural diversity, is a testing ground for the beliefs and principles I intend to run on in this campaign."
I am here because the State of Florida has brought to it thousands of people from across this country who have adopted Florida as their homes -- people whose hopes for a better life are threatened by fouled air and water, by economic doubt, and by an increasing loss of trust in the national leadership.
And most important, I am here because there are top many politicians speaking from Washington. And there are too few speaking to Washington, from America. (APPLAUSE)
I am here because I share in common with hundreds of mayors and citizens an overwhelming sense of exclusion from the power centres of Washington - a sense that how we live, what we care about, what we need for a chance at a better life simply does not matter to those who run this country.
And in 1972, someone must speak for the America that Washington has ignored.
Someone must speak for the men and women without jobs, for the neighbourhoods without hops, for citizens denied equality because they are black or brown or women, for the bitter young, the friendless ageing, and for the millions of Americans who feel their country has lost something precious.
Someone must say, "These people count. They must not go unheard".
