The Australian Labour Party leader - Mr. Whitlam - has ended his visit to China. He, three other party officials, and seven newsmen crossed the border to Hong Kong today after thirteen days in China.
Mr. Whitlam is going on to Tokyo later today. Two members of his delegation are staying on in china for the time being: the Labor Party Federal Secretary, Mr. Young, and Dr. Stephen Fitzgerald. Mr. Whitlam said they had some business to attend to.
Our latest film report from the visit to China covers a visit to a commune near Peking - the Sino Vietnamese Friendship Commune. Philip Koch reports.
IN OUR TERMS THIS COMMUNE IS REALLY A DISTRICT WHERE SEVENTEEN THOUSAND ARES ARE WORKED BY PEOPLE FROM THIRTY FIVE VILLAGES. FOLLOWING THE UPHEAVAL OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION THE STRUCTURE OF THE COMMUNE HAS BEEN ALTERED, BUT MOST LOCAL LEADERS APPEAR TO HAVE RETAINED THEIR POSITIONS AFTER SO CALLED "RE EDUCATION". THESE FARMERS NOW WORK UNDER A COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF ONE THIRD PEOPLES LIBERATION ARMY, ONE THIRD REVOLUTIONARY CADRES (OR PUBLIC SERVANTS) AND ONE THIRD REPRESENTING PEASANTS AND WORKERS. AND FOR EACH SECTION OF THE COMMITTEE AGED, MIDDLE AGED AND YOUTH MUST BE REPRESENTED. THE BRAND NAME OF THE TRACTORS: "THE EAST IS RED." THEY ADMITTED THEY WERE WELL BEHIND IN FARM TECHNOLOGY BUT SAID THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR THEY WERE PRODUCING NEW EQUIPMENT. THE THOUGHT OF REEVING HELP FROM ABOARD APPALLED THEM. THERE ARE SIXTEEN THOUSAND CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNE. THE VERY YOUNG STAY IN NURSERIES WHILE THEIR PARENTS WORK.
LIVING SPACE IN A VILLAGE HOUSE WAS ABOUT HALF THE SIZE OF A SINGLE BEDROOM HOME UNIT IN AUSTRALIA. BUT THEY WERE PROUD OF THEIR COMMUNE AND CONVINCED THAT THROUGH CHAIRMAN MAO'S THOUGHT AND THE PARTY LEADERSHIP GREATER TARGETS COULD BE ACHIEVED.
BUT INSTEAD OF SAYING TARGETS, THE INTERPRETER USED THE WORD 'MIRACLES.' AGAINST THAT, YOU HAVE TO BALANCE THEIR SINCERE REQUEST FOR THE VISITOR TO MAKE CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT OR CRITICISM. THIS IS PHILIP KOCH FOR ABC NATIONAL NEWS AT THE SINO VIETNAMESE FRIENDSHIP VILLAGE NORTH OR PEKING.
