Background: Visnews cameras went to Ghor Mazra village, south Amman Feb 21 to film the latest prophylactic measures now being initiated against malaria in Jordan.
Closely supervised by medical authorities from the World Health Organization, the local health workers are distributing tablets to the labourers and organizing the spraying of the malaria-infested swamps with larva-killing oil.
Also being undertaken is the mass drainage of this swampy area - and canals are being cleared to allow the water to drain into the Dead Sea.
Despite some reports that the use of DDT may be harmful as is increases the resistance of malaria larvae to attack by insecticides -- DDT is being mixed with paraffin for spraying into and around houses and tents.
Prophylactic measures are not restricted to insecticides. Children in local village schools are having blood tests to assess the amount of incipient diseases in the local population.
