  • Description

Israeli warplanes bombed and strafed several targets in southern Lebanon on Sunday (24 June). The Israelis said the raids were aimed at Palestinian guerilla bases and were apparently in retaliation for a bomb attack in Tel Aviv's central bus station which killed two arabs.

SYNOPSIS: Although the targets of these raids were guerrilla bases on the outskirts many of the villages, shops, houses and vehicles were destroyed during the attacks.

The Israeli planes split into two groups. Six aircraft spent twenty minutes strafing and bombing these villages south of the coastal city of Tyre.

Another eight aircraft attacked the Aquibiyeh area about fifteen kilometres (nine miles) south of Sidon. They attacked the coastal road as well as side streets leading to Al-Beysariyeh refugee camp nearby.

It's the second air raid on this area in less than a week. It followed shortly after an announcement from Palestinian commandos that they were responsible for setting the bomb in the Tel Aviv bus station.

At least twenty people were killed or wounded during the raids which the Israelis say were aimed solely at guerrilla bases.

Palestinian guerrillas and left-wing Lebanese forces in bases around the towns retaliated with anti-aircraft fire, but none of the Israeli planes was damaged.
