WILLIAM WHITE, OF SYDNEY, IS NOW PRIVATE WHITE, NATIONAL SERVICEMAN. A DOZEN POLICEMEN WENT TO?

  • Description

WILLIAM WHITE, OF SYDNEY, IS NOW PRIVATE WHITE, NATIONAL SERVICEMAN. A DOZEN POLICEMEN WENT TO WHITE'S HOME AT GLADESVILLE IN SYDNEY ON TUESDAY, AND TOOK HIM AWAY. WHITE HAD BEEN COMMITTED INTO MILITARY CUSTODY LAST THURSDAY (NOV. 17) BY THE SPECIAL FEDERAL COURT IN SYDNEY, BUT DISOBEYED AN ORDER TO REPORT FOR DUTY AT SOUTH HEAD BARRACKS ON FRIDAY MORNING.

WHITE, WHO IS 21, SPENT MOST OF TUESDAY AS HE HAS SPENT EVERY OTHER DAY SINCE THURSDAY -- RECEIVING TELEGRAMS OF CONGRATULATIONS, AND SURROUNDED BY WELL-WISHERS AT HIS GLADESVILLE HOME.

SOME HAD BEEN THERE SO LONG THEY WERE AT HOME TOO. ONE WOMAN COLLECTED MONEY FROM WHITE'S SUPPORTERS TO SEND TELEGRAMS TO PREMIER HAROLD HOLT, MR. ARTHUR CALWELL, OPPOSITION LEADER AND THE MINISTER FOR NATIONAL SERVICE, MR. BURY, PROTESTING AT THE WAY THE NATIONAL SERVICE ACT WAS BEING IMPLEMENTED, IN REGARD TO CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.

ON THE DAY OF HIS ARREST, ABOUT A DOZEN MEMBERS OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES POLICE FORCE ARRIVED AT WHITE'S HOUSE. LED BY AN INSPECTOR, SOME OF THE POLICE PUSHED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CROWD OF DEMONSTRATORS, AND SPOKE TO WHITE INSIDE THE HOUSE.

AS WHITE HAD PROMISED, HE OFFERED PASSIVE RESISTENCE -- THE POLICE HAD TO CARRY HIM FROM THE HOUSE. THEY HAD DIFFICULTY IN GETTING HIM THROUGH THE SHOUTING CROWD, AND OTHER POLICE, WENT IN TO HELP THEM.

WHITE WAS FINALLY CARRIED CLEAR OF THE CROWD AND DRAGGED TO A POLICE CAR. HE OFFERED NO RESISTENCE, AND A SENIOR POLICE OFFICIAL SAID HE SETTLED DOWN WHEN HE WAS PLACED IN THE CAR. HOWEVER, HIS SUPPORTERS DID NOT -- A COUPLE OF THEM THREW THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF THE CAR TO STOP IT DRIVING OFF.

A PLAIN CLOTHED POLICEMAN MOVED ONE OF THEM. ANOTHER REMAINED LYING ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF THE CAR.

THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD OVERLOOKED AN ABILITY OF MOTOR CARS -- TO MOVE BACKWARDS AS WELL AS FORWARDS
WHITE WAS TAKEN TO THE ARMY PERSONNEL DEPOT AT SOUTH HEAD -- THE PLACE HE HAD BEEN ORDERED TO REPORT TO LAST FRIDAY.
