  • Description

There have been recent rallies in Peking against Communist China's President Liu Shao Chi.

The campaign to topple President Lie as leader of the opposition to Chairman Mao Tse-tung has been picking up steam every day. The demonstration and marches in the cities began last weekend (April 1). Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have been out in Peking and other Chinese cities forming long lines. Most of them are youngsters and secondary school students. In Peking, they marched past the residence of President Liu, calling for his destruction.

Red flags wave in the bleak spring sunshine. Huge portraits of Chairman Mao at the head of the line clearly demonstrate to whom they owe their allegiance. Everyone has the little Red Book of Mao's sayings. Soldiers, or Communist Party Officials, lead the slogan shouting, reading them from pieces of paper.

The wall posters, which are coming back in Peking, say: "Shoot Liu Shao Chi," and they call him the top party person in authority taking the capitalist road. Along with President Liu, the others under special attack are Teng Hsiao Ping, party secretary-general, and Tao Chu, former propaganda chief. No one is predicting how the massive and fanatical campaign to oust these opponents of Chairman Mao will end.
