  • Description

WITH THE DISARMING OF PRESIDENT TSHOMBE'S KATANGA ARMY AND CONGO PREMIER CYRILLE ADOULA'S SETTING FEBRUARY 5 AS THE DEADLINE FOR THE INTEGRATION OF KATANGA INTO THE CONGO GOVERNMENT, THE UNITED NATIONS HAS BEEN STRENGTHENING ITS POSITIONS IN THE RECENTLY REBELLIOUS PROVINCE.

UN TROOPS HAVE TAKEN OVER STRATEGIC POSITIONS, SOME IN KOLWEZI. THIS WAS PRESIDENT TSHOMBE'S LAST STRONGHOLD AND A CENTRE OF THE HIGHLY PROFITABLE MINING OPERATION IN KATANGA.

FILM SHOWS KOLWEZI AIRPORT LAST TUESDAY AS UN AIRCRAFT BROUGHT IN GHURKA TROOPS AND JEEPS. ON THE AIRFIELD WERE KATANGESE PLANES DESTROYED EARLIER BY UN FORCES.

AT THE SAME TIME, MR ADOULA HAS MOVED TOWARDS SOFTENING UP HIS RELATIONS WITH PRESIDENT TSHOMBE'S TROOPS. IN A RADIO BROADCAST MR ADOULA TOLD THE KATANGESE SOLDIERS THAT THEY HAD NOT SUFFERED A DEFEAT BUT THAT THE CONGO PEOPLE, ALL OF THEM, HAD ACHIEVED A VICTORY. HE SAID THAT THE KATANGA SOLDIERS HAD SHOWN COMPREHENSION BY REFUSING TO FIGHT AND HE BLAMED OUTSIDERS AND FOREIGN MERCENARIES FOR THE TROUBLE. MR. ADOULA ALSO SPOKE OF FULL COLLABORATION OF THE NATION AND REFERRED TO THE KATANGA SOLDIERS AS "BROTHERS".
