Background: Before leaving for Cairo and the Tripoli Pact summit talks, the Sudanese President, Major-General Jaafar Nimeiry, appealed for national unity at a big popular rally held in Khartoum. He also announced that conscription will be introduced soon.
According to information received with this official film, 60,000 people from all parts of Sudan attended the rally.
President Nimeiry told them the unity of the nation was the only guarantee that the Revolution of 25th May (1969) would continue to lead the nation towards its goal of freedom.
The President praised the Soviet Union and the Socialist Camp for supporting the Arab cause in the conflict with Israel. But referring to the recent crackdown on communists inside the Sudan, he said his government would continue to strike at "misled leftists and their rightist reactionary allies who aim at liquidating the Sudanese revolution."
He also announced that a single organisation comprising all political groups and federations is to be formed in the Sudan.
