  • Description

Chancellor Ludwig Erhard told a Congress of the Christian Democratic Party in Hanover today (Monday) that inflation in the other Common Market countries posed a threat to the stability of West Germany's economy.

Summing up his Government's foreign policy after five months in office, the Chancellor said the Atlantic alliance and the reconciliation with France were cornerstones of its policy. He added that both the United States and France ultimately-stood together in defence of common ideals."
To an audience which included his predecessor Dr. Adenauer, and many prominent Christian Democrats, Chancellor Erhard commented once more on the division of Germany. He said:
(TRANSLATION) I am however now as ever convinced, that it would also be in the interest of the Soviet Union, not to refuse the German people the exercise of their sovereign rights any longer. The Soviet Union itself would gain in respect and trust from the whole world and would acquire measure of safety and prosperity which could not be compared to the small and bitter gains, which Khrushchev draws from the occupation regime of East German.
