Background: The first National Council meeting of the National Pioneer (Youth) Movement opened in Brazzaville on Tuesday (1 Feb). The Council is discussing ways in which the existing primary schools system in the People's Republic of the Congo and the Pioneer Movement can best be integrated. This is considered an important step in the creation of a new "People's School" system which will be put into operation by the education authorities as soon as details are finalised. Unlike many European school systems, the People's School is likely to provide a close and continuing process of education through from early childhood into adulthood, with greater educational opportunities for young adults.
