  • Description

The Viet Cong mounted a big attack on an area north-west of Saloon on Monday (3 June). More than 30 rockets hit the district around the Bien Hoa airbase, and the Saigon Command said that 31 people were killed and 82 injured.

Among the dead were 18 prisoners at the Tan Hiep prison camp. The prison has nine wards, four of them for women, and it was one of these that suffered a direct hit by a rocket. The camp is 18 miles (30 km.) northwest of Saigon, and only two miles from the Bien Hoa airbase.

The rocket hit the ward as the women were preparing breakfast for their fellow prisoners. The roof was brought down, and the victims were buried under the debris. The 55 injured women were taken to hospital at Bien Hoa.

It is believed that the real target for the attack was the airbase, but the nearby village of Tan Hiep also suffered badly. One house was almost completely destroyed and a father and his son were killed. Another family suffered the deaths of the mother and two children.

Simultaneously with the Viet Cong attack launched to the northwest of Saigon, the communists mounted another attack southeast of the South Vietnamese capital. Eight miles down river from the city, a South Korean tanker sank after an explosion which was attributed to communist saboteurs.
