  • Description

The fighting between Palestinian guerrillas and the Lebanese Army, which has suspended operations at Beirut airport, forced Middle East Airlines (MEA) to temporarily transfer its Middle East headquarters of Friday (11 May) to Nicosia, on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

About 50 MEA staff, including pilots, mechanics, clerks and engineers, were flown from Beirut on Thursday (10 May) night, ready to take up duties at Nicosia Airport the following day
The transferred staff immediately began re-routing hundreds of MEA passengers who had been stranded at Nicosia by the fighting in Beirut earlier in the week. All MEA flights scheduled to begin at Beirut are now flying out of Nicosia, and passengers bound for Beirut are being taken on from Cyprus by ship.
