  • Description

SOUTH KOREAN RIOT POLICE SUED BATONS AND TEAR GAS TO BREAK UP A DEMONSTRATION IN SEOUL LAST WEDNESDAY BY ABOUT FIVE THOUSAND STUDENTS. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY OF RESTORING NORMAL RELATIONS WITH JAPAN.

EIGHTY STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AND ABOUT FIFTY INJURED WHEN THEY CLASHED WITH POLICE NEAR THE CAPITAL'S NATIONAL UNIVERSITY AFTER A MASS RALLY. THE MEETING HAD DEMANDED SUSPENSION OF SOUTH KOREAN-JAPANESE TALKS AND CALLED FOR THE ELIMINATION OF ALLEGED CORRUPTION IN THE GOVERNMENT.

DURING THE DEMONSTRATION THE STUDENTS CARRIED A COFFIN WHICH THEY CALLED "THE CORPSE OF NATIONALISTIC DEMOCRACY". A NATIONALISTIC DEMOCRACY IS WHAT THE NEW GOVERNMENT PROMISED FOR SOUTH KOREA WHEN IT TOOK OVER LAST MONTH.

(IN TOKYO FOUR JAPANESE STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AND SIX POLICEMEN INJURED THAT DAY WHEN 900 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CALLED FOR THE IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF TALKS BETWEEN JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA).
