  • Description

IN EASTERN SARAWAK A STRONG MILITARY POST HAS BEEN SET UP BY BRITISH GURKHA TROOPS ABOVE ONE OF THE MORE IMPORTANT STRATEGIC RIVERS IN THE AREA. THE POSITION IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT AS THE RIVER PROVIDES DIRECT ACCESS TO INDONESIAN BORNEO.

THE TROOPS HAVE ONLY RECENTLY ARRIVED IN SARAWAK AFTER A TWENTY-MONTH SPELL OF TRAINING IN BRITAIN. THE GURKHA DIVISION ARE THE LARGEST DIVISION OF TROOPS STATIONED IN MALAYSIA. MANY OF THE SOLDIERS ARE ALREADY EXPERIENCED IN JUNGLE WARFARE, AND SOME SPEAK THE MALAYAN DIALECTS. NEVER-THE -LESS PATROLLING THIS RUGGED AND HEAVILY FORESTED AREA OF EASTERN SARAWAK IS NO EASY TASK. IT TAKES A PARTY OF GURKHAS A DAY TO HACK THEIR WAY THROUGH A THOUSAND YARDS OF THE THICK JUNGLE. THE ARRIVAL OF THE MONSOON MAKES RADIO CONTACT DIFFICULT - AT TIMES IMPOSSIBLE.

THE PATROL POST SHOWN IN THIS FILM OVERLOOKS THE RIVER AS WELL AS WIDE AREAS OF THE JUNGLE AND GUNS AND MORTARS ARE STRATEGICALLY PLACED.
