  • Description

AMERICA'S SECOND MINE ACCIDENT THIS MONTH CLAIMED 18 LIVES. THEY WERE KILLED BY AN EXPLOSION ON TUESDAY AT A POTASH MINE NEAR MOAB, UTAH.

FIVE MORE MEN WERE RESCUED ON THURSDAY. THE TWO OTHER SURVIVORS WERE BROUGHT OUT ON WEDNESDAY. THURSDAY'S FIVE HAD SPENT 49 HOURS IN A SHAFT 3,000 FEET (915 METRES) DOWN THE MINE. THEY ERECTED A MAKE-SHIFT BARRICADE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST DEADLY GAS FUMES.

ALL FIVE WERE IN SURPRISINGLY GOOD CONDITION WHEN THEY REACHED THE SURFACE. THEY HAD, APPARENTLY, BEEN KEPT ALIVE BY OXYGEN FROM A STEEL-SHEATHED AIR PIPE. AMONG THOSE WHO HELPED THE RESCUE WORK WERE WEDNESDAY'S SURVIVORS.

THE BODIES OF THE 18 KILLED HAVE ALL BEEN RECOVERED. A JOINT STATE-FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OF THE CAUSES OF THE EXPLOSION BEGINS ON MONDAY.
