  • Description

For the first time in modern Olympic history the 1980 Games are to be held in an Eastern European country -- the Soviet Union -- and in Moscow the new facilities and "Olympic Village" are nearing completion.

SYNOPSIS: Among the high-rise blocks of southern Moscow, a new complex is being constructed. In time thousands of Muscovites will move into the new apartments to make new homes in the area. But before that these apartments have a unique role to play in Moscow life -- for this will be the "Olympic Village" of the 1980 Games. In all eighteen residential blocks, sixteen storeys high are being built on an area of a hundred and seventy hectares.

Many athletes will be surprised by the spaciousness of the facilities. All the buildings have two and three-room flats, each with a large kitchen and entrance hall. Two athletes will be allowed to a rom which will be equipped with extra long beds for the taller competitors -- a problem that has caused many sleepless nights at previous Games. The ground floor of each block will have a sports storage room, administrative office and medical facilities. Besides residential blocks the "Village" will include a shopping centre, bars and cafes, a cultural centre, ... a dance hall and a dance hall and a discotheque. Athletes will also be able to limber up in the "Village" Sports complex. The Moscow authorities have gone to great pains to provide everything for the athletes' comfort -- they will even find an electric version of traditional Russian Samovar for making tea and coffee.

During the Games athletes will be able to travel to and from Olympic sites on a special bus service, and the famous marble-pillared Moscow metro is within walking distance. The new buildings will stand in landscaped grounds but despite the peaceful surroundings there will be massive security precautions. The Moscow authorities do not want a repeat of the 1972 Munich Olympics when eleven Israelis were shot dead by Arab terrorists.
