Background: Visnews filmed Dec 13 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, the United State's first attempt to launch a tiny squirrel-monkey into space in an intercontinental missile.
This is the missile - a Jupiter - at take off. It roared belching a white ball of fire, thrust upwards loudly, smoothly. The monkey called Gorda strapped in the nose cone wearing protective clothing and recording instruments was later reported missing in the South Atlantic. Jupiter travelled its full range of over 1500 miles went 300 miles up.
Late last month, the U.S. sent up an Atlas intercontinental missile from the same proving ground, declared it travelled 6, 325 miles.
The winds of prestige dropped suddenly 12 days later when an American senator who had a 12-hour interview with Khruschev reported Mr. K. as saying the Soviet Union possessed a missile capable of travelling 8, 600 miles...The State Department admitted it did not doubt Mr. K's claim.
