  • Description

ULAN BATOR IS THE REMOTE CAPITAL OF THE MONGOLIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC, AN INDEPENDENT TERRITORY OF SOME 600,000 SQUARE MILES (1.5 MILLION KILOMETRES) WEDGED BETWEEN THE VAST AREAS OF RUSSIA AND CHINA AND INCORPORATING THE GOBI DESERT.

AFTER THE DECLARATION OF AUTONOMY IN 1924, THE CAPITAL - FORMERLY KNOWN AS URGA - WAS REMODELLED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CENTURIES. WITH RUSSIAN HELP A NEW CITY WAS PLANNED, AND BY THE LATE 1950S ITS CENTRAL FEATURE WAS SUKHE BATOR SQUARE.

A NEOCLASSIC GOVERNMENT BUILDING STANDS ON THE SQUARE, AND IN FRONT OF IT A MAUSOLEUM CONTAINING THE MORTAL REMAINS OF TWO BUILDERS OF MONGOLIAN INDEPENDENCE - SUKHE BATOR AND CHOIBALSAN. OTHER MODERN BUILDINGS ON THE SQUARE ARE THE NATIONAL THEATRE AND THE HOTEL ALTAI. PROMINENT STATUES INCLUDE THOSE OF LENIN, AND OF SUKHE BATOR ON HORSEBACK.

FOURTEEN YEAR AGO ULAN BATOR WAS LINKED BY RAIL WITH THE TRANS-SIBERIAN TRUNK LINE, AND WITH PEKING IN 1956. FIVE MOTOR ROADS LINK THE TOWN WITH THE SOVIET UNION AND THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC. THERE IS ALSO AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. BY NOW, THE MONGOLIAN CAPITAL HAS UPWARDS OF 130,000 INHABITANTS.
