    ELECTIONS TO END A POLITICAL DEADLOCK....ON SUNDAY MORE THAN 2-MILLION PERUVIANS WENT TO THE POLLS TO ELECT A PRESIDENT, 45 SENATORS AND 140 DEPUTIES.A YEAR AGO SIMILAR ELECTIONS WERE NULLIFIED - AND A MILITARY JUNTA TOOK OVER ON THE GROUNDS OF WIDESPREAD ELECTORAL FRAUDS.

    VOTING WAS OBLIGATORY FOR ELECTORS AND POLLING BEGAN IN A CALM ATMOSPHERE.TROOPS WITH ARMOURED VEHICLES WERE ON DUTY AND UNITS OF THE NAVY WERE CALLED IN TO SUPERVISE THE POLLING.THE THREE CHIEF CANDIDATES ARE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR: VICTOR RAUL HAYA DE LA TORRE (AMERICAN POPULAR REVOLUTIONARY ALLIANCE), SEEN VOTING IN LIMA, THE CAPITAL, FERNANDO BELAUNDE TERRY (POPULAR ACTION), AND EX-PRESIDENT MANUEL ODRIA (ODRISTA NATIONAL UNION).

    FIRST RESULTS OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) SHOWED THAT SENOR TERRY HAD A COMFORTABLE LEAD.SOME VOTING PAPERS WENT ASTRAY IN TWO PROVINCES KNOWN TO FAVOUR DR.HAYA DE LA TORRE AND AN ACCUSATION OF ATTEMPTED FRAUD WAS LODGED WITH THE MILITARY JUNTA.HOWEVER, SENOR TERRY'S LEAD IS NOT LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED.
