  • Description

More than 120,000 banner-waving strikers marched through Paris on Thursday (1 December) as a 24-hour national strike hit France's public services and industry. Both the strike -- and the march -- were in protest at the French Government's economic austerity policies.

SYNOPSIS: The march through Paris was organised by three trades unions...the Communist-led Confederation cenerale du Travail, the Socialist Confederation Francaise Democratique du Travail and the main teacher's union.

Chanting "let's finish with austerity and unemployment", the marchers were also demanding a 40-hour week.

The demonstrators included policemen, customs officers, nurses, railwaymen, industrial workers, students and even schoolchildren. Their main protest was a Government plan which they claimed had brought an unemployment figure of just over five per cent... or 1,200,000 people...inflation of almost 10 per cent, and dwindling purchasing power for most workers.

However, union protests have so far failed to deflect Mr. Barre from his programme...even though a General Election is now less than four months away.
