    EMMERICH DANZER, THE AUSTRIAN CHAMPION, RETAINED HIS TITLE IN THE MEN'S EVENT OF THE WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN VIENNA TONIGHT (FRIDAY). IN A DRAMATIC DUEL WITH HIS COMPATRIOT WOLFGANG SCHWARZ, WHO LED AFTER THE COMPULSORY FIGURE BY A MARGIN OF NEARLY 16 POINTS, DANZER GAVE A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE CONTAINING A NUMBER OF DIFFICULT JUMPS.

    THE 23-YEAR-OLD CHAMPION GAINED A TOTAL OF 52.6 MARKS OUT OF 54 FROM THE NINE JUDGES FOR CONTENT OF PERFORMANCE, AND 53 MARKS -- INCLUDING THE MAXIMUM OF SIX -- FOR EXECUTION.

    SCHWARZ ALSO GAVE A VERY FINE PERFORMANCE AND TOTALLED 3.8 MORE POINTS THAN THE CHAMPION. BUT DANZER RECEIVED THE MAJORITY OF FIRST PLACEMENTS BY THE JUDGES. DANZER HAD A TOTAL OF 2,263.1 POINTS, WHILE SCHWARZ COLLECTED 2,266.9 POINTS.

    GARY VISCONTI (UNITED STATES) WAS THIRD AND DONALD KNIGHT (CANADA) FOURTH. THE COMPLICATED SCORING SYSTEM GAVE THIRD PLACE TO THE AMERICAN ALTHOUGH HE HAD A LESS FAVOURABLE PLACEMENT FIGURE THAN KNIGHT. ANOTHER AMERICAN, SCOTT ALLEN, TOOK FIFTH PLACE.
