  • Description

THE SOUTH AFRICAN FOREIGN MINISTER, DR. HILGARD MULLER, ARRIVED IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) ON A SHORT VISIT DURING WHICH HE WILL HAVE TALKS WITH BRITAIN'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER.

DR. MULLER ARRIVED FROM THE HAGUE AND IS DUE TO LEAVE ON SATURDAY FOR NEW YORK TO ATTEND THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

ONE OF THE ITEMS EXPECTED TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE FOREIGN MINISTERS IS BRITAIN'S DECISION TO STOP THE SUPPLY OF ARMS TO SOUTH AFRICA. THE DECISION WAS MADE BY THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT BECAUSE OF THE PARLIAMENT POLICY OF DR. VERWOERD'S GOVERNMENT.

SIXTEEN BUCCANEER STRIKE AIRCRAFT, ORDERED BY SOUTH AFRICA WHEN BRITAIN'S CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT WAS IN POWER, ARE NOW TO BE DELIVERED. THE ISSUE HAD BEEN IN DOUBT UNTIL THIS AFTERNOON WHEN PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON SAID THE CONTRACT WOULD BE HONOURED.

MR. WILSON SAID THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT WOULD SANCTION THE SHIPMENT OF SPARES REQUIRED BUT NO FURTHER SOUTH AFRICAN CONTRACTS WOULD BE ENTERED INTO.

IT IS BELIEVED THAT SOUTH AFRICAN MIGHT TURN TO ITALY FOR STRIKE AIRCRAFT AND ORDER THE MACCHI JET, WHICH IS POWERED BY A BRITISH ENGINE.
