  • Description

Fourteen shipwrecked Egyptian sailors, picked up by an Israeli missile ship last week after abandoning their burning Greek cargo vessel, were released by the Israelis today (Saturday). They left Lydda airport saying they were pleased with the treatment they received while in Israel.

The Egyptians, together with ten Greek crew members, spent 50 hours in lifeboats after fire swept through the 1,800 ton freighter Maria Christina.

The rescued seamen were taken to Haifa seven days ago. And though the Greek crew members were released shortly afterwards, the Egyptians were taken on tours of the area by Israeli officials. The abandoned freighter was later towed into Haifa port by Israeli tugs.

Today's release of the sailors seemed unconnected with the plight of the airline hostages held by Palestinian commandos in Jordan. Israeli officials had announced that the sailors would be freed shortly after their rescue last week.
