  • Description

Latest troops to join the huge build-up of military strength in Cyprus at Nicosia on Friday, June 20th. They were several hundred men of the British 1st Guards Brigade, flown from Abingdon, Berks., in Comet aircraft of Transport Command, RAF. On the airfield to meet them was Director of Operations, Cyprus, Major-Gen. Douglas Kendrew.

The detachments of Guards are under the command of Brig. Fitz George Balfour, who was chief of staff to the Director until three months ago.

The number of British troops now stationed in Cyprus is estimated at between 20,000 and 30,000. The Guards, it is thought, will be employed in internal security duties. Other units, including the paratroopers flown over a week ago, might be held in readiness for operations outside the island.

On Wednesday, 1,700 American marines are due to leave Norfolk, Virginia, to join the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. They are travelling by sea and would be in position, if required for intervention in the Lebanon, for instance, in a fortnight's time.
