  • Description

FIVE YOUNG CADETS WHO WILL FORM THE NUCLEUS OF KENYA'S NEW AIR FORCE, ARE BEING TRAINED BY BRITAIN'S ROYAL AIR FORCE AT A STATION NEAR NAIROBI, THE KENYA CAPITAL. THE CADETS, THREE OF THEM KIKUYU AND THE OTHER TWO LUO TRIBESMEN, ARE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A FLIGHT-LIEUTENANT SENT OUT FROM BRITAIN.

AN AIR FORCE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE TRAINING BEING GIVEN TO THESE YOUNG AFRICANS WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THAT GIVEN TO CADETS IN BRITAIN. THE KENYA AIR FORCE IS HOPING THAT WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS MORE YOUNG MEN WILL APPLY FOR TRAINING AND THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IS EXPANDING THEIR TRAINING SCHEDULE TO ABSORB MORE CADETS.

A KENYA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE SPOKESMAN, ASKED IF JET AIRCRAFT WOULD BE USED IN THE NEW AIR FORCE, SAID THAT THIS WAS LOOKING TOO FAR AHEAD.

(THE FORMATION OF A KENYA AIR FORCE COMES SOON AFTER A SERIOUS REVOLT IN ANOTHER BRANCH OF THE COUNTRY'S DEFENCE. IN JANUARY, BRITISH TROOPS WERE AIRLIFTED TO KENYA AT THE REQUEST OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. JOMO KENYATTA, TO HELP QUELL A MUTINY AMONG MEMBERS OF THE KENYA RIFLES. THE MUTINY IN KENYA WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SIMILAR REVOLTS IN TANGANYIKA AND UGANDA.)
