A ROTTERDAM TUG CAPSIZED LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) IN ROUGH SEAS-OFF THE HOOK OF HOLLAND WHILE ON ITS WAY TO ASSIST THE 9,000-TON GREEK FREIGHTER, ALKYONE, PINNED TO A PIER BY GALE-FORCE WINDS.

THE ALKYONE WAS STEAMING FROM ROTTERDAM - THE PORT INLAND FROM THE HOOK OF HOLLAND - TO HAMBURG WITH A CARGO OF COPRA ON BOARD.

THE FREIGHTER'S BOWS WERE PINNED ON THE PIER BUT ITS STERN WAS FREE. IT WAS REPORTED TO BE IN NO IMMEDIATE DANGER AFTER IT WENT AGROUND YESTERDAY.

A DUTCH NAVY HELICOPTER RESCUED THE NINE CREW MEMBERS, INCLUDING THE CAPTAIN, OF THE TUG VIKINGBANK SOON AFTER IT CAPSIZED. THE 227-TON TUG WAS ONE OF TWO ATTEMPTING TO FREE THE ALKYONE.

THE TUG'S CREW, COLD BUT SAFE, WERE TAKEN TO THE RED CROSS BUILDING AT HOOK OF HOLLAND. THEY SAID A TOWING CABLE TO THE ALKYONE BROKE AND WATER BEGAN POURING INTO THE ENGINE ROOM. THEN THE VIKINGBANK CAPSIZED.

MEANWHILE, THE LIFEBOAT, QUEEN JULIANA, STOOD BY WITH THE REMAINING TUG BUT THE GREET FREIGHTER'S CREW STAYED ABOARD.
