One country that benefits form a world-wide demand for children's toys is Hong Kong, the largest toy exporter in the world. Exports of toys from the British Crown colony in the first eight months of the year were worth about 300 million U.S. dollars (GBP 180 million Sterling) -- an increase of about one-third over the same period last year.
SYNOPSIS: Local toy factories have been working at full production levels to meet orders from around the world. The toy industry in the colony expects the total value of toys exported this year to reach 400 million U.S. dollars (GBP 240 million sterling). At present the Unites States is the biggest buyer, taking about half of Hong Kong's exports. Other major buyers are Britain and West Germany. There are 1,500 toy factories in Hong Kong, employing nearly 50,000 workers.
Manufacturers claim that toys made in Hong Kong are among some of the safest on the international market. Each range of toys has to undergo the most rigorous examination for safety and durability, they say. Even the coating of paint on each toy has to be tested to ensure that it does not contain toxins harmful to children, according to the makers.
