  • Description

PLANS TO ACHIEVE A PEACE SETTLEMENT IN THE YEMEN HAVE BEEN COMPLICATED BY CONDITIONS LAID DOWN BY BOTH THE REPUBLICAN AND ROYALISTS FACTIONS. IN BEIRUT, A THREE - NATION PEACE BODY, COMPRISING IRAQ, MOROCCO AND THE SUDAN, IS ATTEMPTING TO ARRANGE A PREPARATORY COMMITTEE TO PAVE THE WAY FOR A RECONCILIATION CONFERENCE TO END THE YEMEN'S FIVE-YEAR-OLD CIVIL WAR.

THE SUDANESE PRIME MINISTER, MR. MOHAMMED MAHGOUB, AND THE ACTING IRAQI FOREIGN MINISTER, MR ISMAIL KHAIRALLAH, ARE AMONG THOSE IN BEIRUT TRYING TO SIMPLIFY MATTERS. THEY MET THE YEMENI ROYALIST DELEGATION ON JANUARY 13 AND 14. THE ROYALISTS ARE BEING LED BY PRINCE ABDEL-RAHMAN BEN YEHIA. THEY HAVE TOLD THE THREE-NATION PEACE BODY THAT THEIR SIDE WOULD NOT CEASE FIRE "UNTIL SOVIET INTERVENTION IS ENDED" IN YEMEN AND SOVIET TECHNICIANS WERE WITHDRAWN FROM THE CITIES OF SANA'A AND T'EZ. AND AS LONG AS SO-CALLED SOVIET INTERFERENCE EXISTED, THE ROYALISTS WOULD NOT SIT ON THE PREPARATORY PEACE COMMITTEE. THE REPUBLICANS SAY THEY WILL NOT EVEN MEET THE PREPARATORY COMMITTEE UNTIL THEY HAVE VATTED THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS.
