  • Description

SIX MEN DIED IN BLAZING TANK DURING A BATTLE FOR THE VILLAGE OF OFUSU ON THE BORDER BETWEEN THE WESTERN AND MID-WESTERN REGIONS OF NIGERIA. THEY WERE MEMBERS OF THE REBEL ARMY OF BIAFRA, THE SECESSIONIST STATE THAT WAS FORMERLY EASTERN NIGERIA.

THE VILLAGE WAS RECAPTURED FROM THE BIAFRANS AFTER A HARD FOUGHT BATTLE IN WHICH THE FEDERAL TROOPS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE SUFFERED HEAVY CASUALTIES.

THE TANK IN WHICH THE SIX MEN DIED WAS "HOME-MADE". THEY HAD CONSTRUCTED IT BY MELTING DOWN STEEL FROM THE ENUGU BRANCH OF THE NIGERIAN RAILWAY AND ERECTING AN ARMOURED SUPERSTRUCTURE ON THE CHASSIS OF A LORRY.

THE SOLDIERS MANNING IT DEFIED THE NUMERICALLY SUPERIOR FEDERAL FORCES -- UNTIL IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE TANK MOVED ON RUBBER WHEELS. FEDERAL SOLDIERS SPRAYED THESE WITH PETROL AND SET THEM ALIGHT.

THE VILLAGE WAS CAPTURED AFTER FOUR DAYS FIGHTING AND ONE OF THE CASUALTIES WAS THE BIAFRAN TROOP COMMANDER WHOSE LANDROVER VEHICLE WAS SEIZED BY THE FEDERAL FORCES.

RADIO REPORTS FROM THE BIAFRAN CAPITAL, ENUGU, SAID THAT REBEL FORCES HAD WIPED OUT NEARLY A PLATOON OF FEDERAL TROOPS AND CAPTURED OTHERS DURING THE FIGHTING. THE REPORTS ALSO CLAIMED THAT A LARGE QUANTITY OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION AND SOME ENEMY VEHICLES WERE TAKEN.
