In Brazil the event the whole country has been waiting for exploded into life on Saturday (4 February) -- the annual carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Thousands flocked into the streets to dance to the music of samba bands.
SYNOPSIS: As always Rio spared no efforts in making the carnival a magnificent spectacle --- and as always one of the main attractions was the beautiful girls.
Four days of non-stop celebration were kicked off by a procession down the Avenida Rio Branco, one of the city's main streets.
At the National Hotel entrants in the fancy dress competition unveiled the extravagant costumes which many of them had been working on ever since the last carnival.
Forty-seven contestants were competing for top prizes awarded in different categories for the most original and luxurious creations.
At Rio's Canecao night club hundreds of revellers paid 80 U.S. dollars each to attend a party that went on all night. The music continued without interruption for eight hours as samba bands took turns to play on a revolving stage.
Partygoers had the option of wearing fancy dress or black tie, although the heat and the carnival spirit made scanty costumes the most popular choice. But there were bigger and even more exotic attractions in store -- like the parade of Rio's 10 top samba schools with frenzied dancers swaying their way through the city's streets.
