Background: AFTER FIVE DAYS OF TORRENTIAL RAINS, LARGE AREAS OF NORTH-WEST ITALY AREA BADLY HIT BY FLOODS. ALREADY AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES. THE RAGING WATERS HAVE CUT AND RAIL TRAFFIC IN MANY AREAS AND A NUMBER OF BRIDGES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.

ON THURSDAY, THE PO RIVER, ITALY'S BIGGEST RIVER, WAS SWOLLEN 16 FEET ABOVE ITS NORMAL LEVEL AND BURST ITS BANKS, COVERING RICH FARM LANDS. ANOTHER RIVER, THE TANARO, ALSO OVERFLOWED AND FLOODED NEIGHBOURING FIELDS TO A DEPTH OF TEN FEET. HELICOPTERS WERE USED TO RESCUE PEOPLE TRAPPED IN MANY OF THE SMALL VILLAGES. IN SOME CASES FAMILIES HUDDLED ON ROOFTOPS TO AWAIT RESCUE.

IN THE HEAVILY POPULATED SUBURBS OF TURIN, HOUSES WERE FLOODED, AND MANY OF THE ROADS LEADING IN AN OUT OF THE CITY WERE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF UNDERMINED AND UNSAFE BRIDGES.

SHIPPING IN THE PORT OF GENOA WAS DELAYED AS MORE THAN 40 SHIPS WAITED FOR THE BAD WEATHER TO ABATE BEFORE LOADING AND UNLOADING.
