  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (20 November) authorised the setting up of a United Committee on Cyprus if talks between greek and Turkish Cypriots fail to make progress by the end of next March. The resolution ended six days of debate on the Mediterranean island. It repeats the main points of drafts passed in previous years--a demand for the withdrawal of all foreign armed forces on the island and a call for the resumption of talks between the two communities. The United Kingdom's representative Sir Anthony Parsons and Turkish representative Mr. Orhan Eralp agreed that the two communities themselves must be committed to the resumption of the peace talks. But Mr. Eralp expressed doubt as to whether the United Nations resolution would help revive what he called "effective negotiations" between the Greek and Turkish factions.

SYNOPSIS: Britain's Sir Anthony Parsons then addressed the delegates.
