Background: Only sporadic shooting was reported on the Iran-Iraq border on Wednesday (13 February) following hostilities which flared up on Sunday (10 February) and left an estimated 150 men killed or wounded on both sides.

The government-owned Iran News Agency (PARS) said on Tuesday (12 February) that the border was quiet, forces at the border had been reinforced and were alerted to cope with any "act of aggression".

An Iranian Army General Staff spokesman said the Iraqis had killed 41 Iranian frontier guards and wounded 81 others in Sunday's border clashes. He said 12 dead Iraqis were left on Iranian territory along with a large amount of arms and ammunition.

The spokesmen said the fighting occurred when Iraqi troops, backed by artillery, attacked Iranian border posts at Western Mehran and in the Reza-Abad region. He said Iraqi artillery also shelled the Kan-Jan-Cham Dam in the area.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Iraq -- broken off by Baghdad in December 1971 -- were formally re-established last October during the Middle East war.

Sporadic border clashes between the two countries have flared up in recent years.

The Iraqi government issued a statement over Baghdad Radio on Sunday which charged that Iranian jets had crossed deep into Iraqi airspace. It said one Iraqi officer wa skilled and 22 Iraqi troops wounded in the border fighting.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry sent a strong protest to the Iraqis against what it termed the Iraqi forces' aggression.

The Iranian protest note -- reportedly unanswered -- demanded compensation for Iranian victims and punishment for those responsible.
