  • Description

In Chile military officers and police colleagues turned out on Wednesday (25 April)] at the funeral of a security force member killed while trying to defuse a bomb planted by anti-government guerrillas. President Augosto Pincochet also attended to pay his last respects to the dead man, Lieutenant Luis Carevic Cubillos.

SYNOPSIS: The pallbearers consisted of high-ranking officers of the armed forces and police. The bomb which killed Lieutenant Cubillos was one of several that the guerrillas planted recently in Santiago.

Press reports have said the bombs were sophisticated devices, and Chile's Minister for the Interior predicted after Lieutenant Cubillos's death that he, regrettably, would not be the last young officer fated to die trying to contain terrorism in Chile. The authorities had decided that a man who perished while displaying his courage should be granted a funeral with full military honours. As well as the president, the mourners included members of the military junta which has ruled Chile since a violent coup in 1973.

In the wake of the recent bomb incidents, the government has stepped up its campaign to track down the guerrillas, whom they say were trained in Cuba.
