    For the past month former Indian Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi's 31-year-old son Sanjay has been in prison for trying to influence prosecution witnesses in conspiracy proceedings against him. But on Monday (3 June) he was freed on bail -- and was given a hero's welcome as he emerged from court.

    SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the New Delhi courthouse waiting for his release. Shouting slogans, they mobbed Mr. Gandhi and took him in procession through the capital's main shopping centre. Asked about his month in prison his only comment was "It was alright". Recently Mrs Indira Gandhi has been trying to stage a political comeback and has been campaigning energetically in local government elections.

    Sanjay Gandhi is being tried for alleged conspiracy in destroying a film made about corrupt politicians during the internal emergency imposed by his mother when she was Prime Minister in 1975. The prosecution says that after the emergency burned film cannisters were found on the premises of Mr. Gandhi's Maruti car factory near Delhi. Most of the prosecution witnesses are his former employees.

    During his imprisonment Mr. Gandhi was brought from jail each day to attend the trial, which has now been adjourned until the ??? of June.

    If convicted he faces a possible 10 years imprisonment -- but for the time being he is free on bail of 5,000 rupees (625 U.S. dollars) and a surety for a similar amount.
