    Eighteen drivers have qualified so far for the 33 places in the Indianapolis 500 auto race on 30 May at Indianapolis, Indiana.

    The trials held 18 and 19 May were marred by a series of crashes and fires.

    Pernelli Jones of California set the record pace of 151.163 miles an hour on 18 May.On Sunday, A.J.Foyt, the 1961 winner of the race, won second position by averaging 150.615 miles an hour.Jones won the pole position for the second straight year.

    Of those qualified so far, all are Americans, except for Jimmy Clark of Scotland and Pedro Rodriguez of Mexico.

    Foyt failed to qualify on 18 May when these films were made but did so the following day.Dan Gurney of California smashed up his car, a Lotus-Ford, in a pre-trial practice run 18 May.And he failed on that day to qualify while driving a second Lotus-Ford.But he made it the next day.

    There will be other trials this coming weekend.But Jones has clinched the pole position and cannot be displaced even if another driver surpasses his speed in the coming trials.
