  • Description

POLICE CLASHED WITH BANNER-CARRYING DEMONSTRATORS IN THE CENTRE OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, MAY 8, WHEN A MARCH ORGANISED BY THE "MAY 8 MOVEMENT" TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO, TRIED TO DISRUPT THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC IN THE CITY.

BANNERS BEARING THE SLOGANS "WE WANT PEACE", AND "WE WANT DISARMAMENT", WERE CONFISCATED. THE "MAY 8 MOVEMENT", CALLING FOR A NUCLEAR TEST BAN, COMPLETE DISARMAMENT, AND SETTLEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL PROBLEMS THROUGH NEGOTIATION, CALLED THE MARCH TO FOLLOW A ONE-MINUTE "PEACE STRIKE" THROUGHOUT THE CITY.

WHEN HUNDREDS OF DEMONSTRATORS CONVERGED ON THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, BRINGING THE TRAFFIC TO A STANDSTILL, POLICE MOVED IN. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE QUICKLY DISPERSED AND THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC RESTORED. IN THE OTHER PARTS OF THE CITY THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORDERLY.
