Background: Following lengthy tradition, the Head of the Italian State, President Gronchi, today opened the Biennale International d'Erte di Venezia having arrived in equally traditional fashion at the Exhibition grounds in Venice - by gondola.

After being greeted by the Guardini di Castello, the President and his Party walked through the gardens to the pavilions where he inspected many of the ultra-modern works of painting and sculpture now on display.

The British Pavilion has been sponsored by the British Council, and features sculpture by Kenneth Armitage, an outstanding example of the young school of British sculptors. Speaking of his work a leading art critic, Sir Herbert Read, says "Armitage is trying to express the quality that makes things alive and this leads him to forms that are informal, embryonic.
