  • Description

LADIES DAY AT BRITAIN'S ROYAL ASCOT RACE MEETING WAS MARKED BY SUN AND SHOWERS, THE SUCCESS OF FOUR FAVOURITES, THE WINNING OF THE NEW "JACKPOT" POOL, AND, OF COURSE, THE DISPLAY OF FASHIONS.

QUEEN ELIZABETH AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL LADIES DAY IS TRADITIONALLY THE OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN TO OUTDO ONE ANOTHER IN THE FASHION STAKES, AND HAT CAN BE A MORE REWARDING WINNER THAN A HORSE. THIS YEAR'S FASHIONS TENDED TO BE A MIXTURE OF MODERN AND TRADITIONAL DESIGNS. MINI-SKIRTS MINGLED WITH MINK AND THE HATS WERE AS OUTRAGEOUS AS EVER, RANGING FROM HOME-MADE TO THE CREATIONS OF THE WORLD'S LEADING DESIGNERS.

RAIN THREATENED TO SPOIL THE AFTERNOON, BUT LATER THE SUN BROKE THROUGH AND SHONE FOR A CHANGE ON THE PUNTERS AFTER TOW DAYS OF SHOCK RESULTS. THE NEW "JACKPOT" INITIATED BY THE TOTALISOR BOARD AT THE MEETING WAS FINALLY SHARED BY 56 INVESTORS WHO SUCCESSFULLY FORECAST ALL SIX WINNERS OF THE AFTERNOON. ON BOTH PREVIOUS DAYS THERE HAD BEEN NO WINNING TICKETS AND THE TOTAL CARRIED FORWARD TO LADIES DAY WAS NEARLY ???85,000.

THE MAIN RACE OF THE AFTERNOON PROVIDED A REPEAT WIN FOR FIGHTING CHARLIE IN THE GOLD CUP, WORTH PRIZE MONEY OF ???10,355. SUPPORTERS OF THE 2-1 JOINT FAVOURITE HAD AN ANXIOUS MOMENT WHEN FIGHTING CHARLIE RAN WIDE ON THE FINAL BEND AND LOOKED TO HAVE LOST HIS CHANCE. BUT JOCKEY GREVILLE STARKEY RALLIED HIS MOUNT BRILLIANTLY, CHALLENGED ALL OVER AGAIN AND WENT ON TO WIN EASILY FROM BIOMYDRIN. AUSTRALIAN SCOBIE BREASLEY HAD LED FOR A LONG WAY ON BIOMYDRIN, BUT WAS PASSED BY FIGHTING CHARLIE AND MINTMASTER. HE BROUGHT HIS MOUNT UP AGAIN TO SNATCH SECOND PLACE FROM MINTMASTER WITH A WELL-TIMED RUN. LAST YEAR FIGHTING CHARLIE WAS RIDDEN BY LESTER PIGGOTT, FOURTH THIS YEAR ON THE OTHER JOINT-FAVOURITE, AEGEAN BLUE.
