  • Description

In Seoul, South Korea, 790 couples from 10 countries were married on Wednesday (October 21) in what is claimed to be the world's biggest mass marriage.

The two-hour ceremony was conducted by Mr. Sun-Myung Moon, founder of the Tongil (Unification) church and afterwards the couples began a 40-day celibacy and evangelical work instead of honeymoons.

The ceremony was held at the Changchung Gymnasium in Eastern Seoul. It was the sixth mass wedding arranged by the church since 1960 but the first international one. Five hundred and thirty-nine of the couples were from South Korea, 235 from Japan and the others from the United States, West Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Australia, Britain and Taiwan. Originally 777 couples were to have been married, but a church spokesman said an additional mine Korean and four Japanese couples arrived for the ceremony.

The Tongil Church - its full title is the Holy Spirit Association for Unification of World Christianity - was founded in 1944 and claims to have 300,000 followers in Korea and 40,000 in other countries.

The church said the purpose of the wedding was to inspire the couples of different nationalities with the spirit of friendship, co-operation and unity.
