Background: The release from detention of the former Portuguese President, Antonio de Spinola, -- who had returned to Portugal after 18 months in exile -- has aroused considerable left-wing protest.

SYNOPSIS: On Friday about 8,000 demonstrators took to the streets to march on the National Assembly. Senhor Spinola -- now reduced to the public title 'comrade' after being stripped of his army rank of General -- arrived from exile in Brazil.

He was immediately arrested and questioned. He fled the country in March last year following the failure of a right-wing coup aimed at restoring him to power. He was one of the original architects of the revolution which toppled the right-wing dictatorship in 1974, but resigned the Presidency five months later after losing a power struggle with radical left-wing army officers. His release on Thursday followed a judge's rule that there was insufficient evidence to link him with the 1974 plot.
