  • Description

TODAY (MONDAY) FIVE HUNDRED MORE KENYAN ASIANS ARRIVED IN LONDON, U.K., ANXIOUS TO BEAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S NEW IMMIGRATION BILL, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BECOME LAW ON THURSDAY (20 FEBRUARY). AFTER THIS DATE, PRESENTATION OF A BRITISH PASSPORT WILL NO LONGER ALLOW AUTOMATIC ENTRY. AMONG THE IMMIGRANT ARRIVALS WAS A FOUR-MAN DELEGATION FROM NAIROBI, FLYING TO TRY TO PERSUADE THE GOVERNMENT TO ABANDON THE BILL. LATER ANOTHER DELEGATION CALLED ON MR. DAVID ENNALS, HOME OFFICE UNDER SECRETARY, WITH APPARENTLY LITTLE SUCCESS.

THE PLANES BEGAN TO ARRIVE IN THE HALF-LIGHT OF THE MORNING. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY IMMIGRANTS CAME OFF THE FIRST TWO PLANES, ABOUT A THIRD OF THEM CHILDREN. THEIR PARENTS BROUGHT CONFLICTING STORIES OF THE SITUATION THEY'D LEFT BEHIND IN KENYA. ONE MAN SAID THE RUSH FOR SEATS WAS OVER, ANOTHER THAT HE'D BEEN OFFERED GBP200 STERLING FOR A GBP70 TICKET.

THE FOUR-MAN DELEGATION FROM NAIROBI, LED BY DR. GURCHURAN SANDHU, HOPES TO ARRANGE TALKS WITH THE HOME SECRETARY AND WILL LOBBY OTHER PROMINENT PUBLIC FIGURES. DR. SANDHU HAD NO DOUBTS ABOUT HIS ATTITUDE TO THE BILL....
(THE DOCTOR WAS THEN ASKED IF IT WOULD NOT BE EASIER FOR KENYAN ASIANS TO GO TO INDIA OR PAKISTAN--COUNTRIES THAT WOULD ACCEPT THEM.)
