  • Description

The Olympic Flame, carried by relays of runners throughout the Japanese islands for the past month, arrived in Sapporo on Saturday (29 January) for the opening of the 11th Winter Games on Thursday (3 February).

The flame was ignited at Olympic, Greece last month, before being flown to Japan. From Tokyo it was split into three and some 16,000 boys and girls have since covered almost 4,800 kilometers (2,880 miles) relaying blazing torches throughout 309 cities, towns and villages.

On Sunday (30 January) the three flames will be merged into one single flame after a parade through the streets of central Sapporo. The final act will come in Thursday's opening ceremony, when 16-year-old Sapporo schoolboy Hideki Takaba will run up 103 steps at the Makomanai Speed Skating Rink to ignite the giant sacred flame cauldron that will symbolically burn throughout the games.
