  • Description

Two American helicopter rescued eleven people snowed up in the Eagle's Nest Inn, on the Kehlstein Mountain, Bavaria, on October 23 - the former mountain retreat of Hitler, built for him by Himmler. The innkeeper, his wife and nine guests were isolated for five days when heavy snow falls blocked the mountain road and cut off power to the inn.

The U.S. Army had waited several days before making the rescue attempt. All round the inn the snow was between three and four feet deep and very soft. When the snow stopped falling the helicopters searched the mountainous area for suitable landing places. The snow-bound eleven were taken to the U.S. Army camp near Berchtesgaden.
