Background: Four hundred Upper Clyde shipyard workers from Glasgow rallied in London's Trafalgar Square on Sunday afternoon (12 Sept) after travelling from Scotland by special train. They marched along Whitehall to Downing Street to hand in a petition, protesting at the closure of the shipyards, after hearing speeches from leaders who aroused French employers of trying to buy their skills at out-prices. During the march along Whitehall, the demonstrators shouted out slogans calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister, Mr Heath.

SYNOPSIS: 400 Clydeside shipyard workers from Scotland rallied in London's Trafalgar Square on Sunday and heard leaders accuse French employers of attempting to buy their skills at cut-prices.

A march down Whitehall with banners and placards followed. Many demonstrators chanted slogans calling for the resignation of Britain's Prime Minister, Mr Heath. The rally and march had been organised with the help of the London Co-operative Society's Political Committee. The workers had travelled down from Glasgow by special train, and were joined later by 1,100 London supporters.

At Downing Street, a delegation of leaders handed in a petition at the Prime Minister's residence. It called for the nationalisation of the ship-building industry, and deplored the high level of unemployment.
