  • Description

A massive operation to half the flow of lava from the continuing eruptions of Mount Heimaey, on an island off Iceland, began on Wednesday (21 February).

Firemen pumped thousands of gallons of sea water onto the lava in an attempt to solidify it before it reaches the already pumice-laden town of Vesmannaejyar while bulldozers pushed up barriers of earth to shield the town in case the sea water doesn't do its job.

And while the efforts to stop the lava flow continue, so do the operations to evacuate the little town... just in case. But it hasn't been easy. Hurricanes, snowstorms and poor visibility have been holding back the big airlift operation.

The town's mayor still says he wants to fight the volcano, but he also says he's as ready as everyone left in the town to leave if he has to.
