  • Description

BRITAIN'S FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR PATRICK GORDON WALKER, RESIGNED THIS MORNING (FRIDAY) AFTER HIS SECOND ELECTION DEFEAT IN THREE MONTHS. HE LOST HIS SEAT IN THE OCTOBER GENERAL ELECTION AND THEN STOOD IN A BY-ELECTION YESTERDAY AT THE LONDON CONSTITUENCY OF LEYTON. THE RESULTS OF THIS ELECTION TURNED A LABOUR MAJORITY OF NEARLY 8,000 VOTES INTO AN OPPOSITION CONSERVATIVE LEAD OF 205 AND MUST BE REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MOST SENSATIONAL POLITICAL DEFEATS OF THE CENTURY.

NOW MR GORDON WALKER'S FUTURE IS IN DOUBT. THIS MORNING HE CALLED AT NO 10 DOWNING STREET TO SEE THE PRIME MINISTER AND HANDED IN HIS RESIGNATION. THE 57-YEAR-OLD FOREIGN SECRETARY LEFT AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES. HE MADE NO STATEMENT, BUT HIS RESIGNATION WAS ANNOUNCED LATER.

SHORTLY AFTER HE LEFT, A NUMBER OF LEADING MINISTERS ARRIVED AT DOWNING STREET. AMONG THEM WERE MR ANTHONY GREENWOOD, THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, MR DOUGLAS JAY, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE, MR DENIS HEALEY, MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MR RAY GUNTER, MINISTER OF LABOUR, AND EARL MOUNTBATTEN, CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STATE.

THE MOST LIKELY SUCCESSOR TO MR GORDON WALKER IS DENIS HEALEY, 47 YEAR-OLD DEFENCE SECRETARY. HE IS WELL KNOWN OVERSEAS, AND WHEN THE LABOUR PARTY WERE IN OPPOSITION WAS, IN TURN, THEIR SPOKESMAN ON COMMONWEALTH AND COLONIAL AFFAIRS, FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AND DEFENCE.

MR GORDON WALKER IS EXPECTED TO BE CREATED A PEER AND GO TO BRITAIN'S UPPER HOUSE, THE HOUSE OF LORDS, WHERE HE COULD STILL HOLD HIGH OFFICE IN THE GOVERNMENT.
